chicago day 3

Walked North, up the Magnificent Mile to Lincoln Park. Walked round the zoo (free, and very good) until the summer camp groups got too much for us. Wandered round the lily pond, and a quick detour into the conservatory. Had lunch at an old style diner which didn't look like much from the outside but was great (thank you trip advisor). First taste of root beer.
Walked back through the Lincoln Park district, past a local park with statues from Wizard of Oz (Frank Baum) was born near here. Mhairi and I took a wee detour into the Water Tower shopping plaza on the way back to the hotel.
There were fireworks at Navy Pier at 9.30, so we walked along to the end of the pier from the hotel, great views of Chicago at night.  Also just enough time to explore one souvenir shop, but I suspect most of them were the same, not worth spending any more time there.
