Goodbye Irmelin
Today was my sort of step grandmothers funeral. It was a wonderful humanist sending off in thick woodland somewhere outside Norwich.
There she is in her felt, blanket stitched coffin looking for all the world like a giant hatbox, rather fitting given she used to be a milliner for the Royal Opera. People decorated her coffin with paper flowers, many of which were hand made. Irmelin's three children and grandchildren gave moving eulogies of her long and fully lived life, interspersed with music and song. Beautiful and perfect.
Funerals always highlight the good points of the dead person, but Irmelin really was a genuinely creative, caring and funny woman. I was sat thinking about how much time and energy is wasted fucking around navel gazing and not doing stuff. Just get on with it and live your life, don't waste time, because before you know it you'll be in a box.
