Hurst Castle ablutions

Today my sister and I went down to the coast at Keyhaven.  After a pub lunch we took the ferry out to Hurst Castle.  It sits at the end of a long shingle spit at the mouth of the Solent and was originally one of Henry VIII's naval fortifications.  It also has a very large, very dilapidated section built much later.  it was decommissioned in the mid '50s.

We didn't get deeply involved in learning about its history - that seemed like something for another day - but we did scramble all over it.  It is a very 'other' place and feels like the young lads who served here years ago had only just left.  This is where they would have washed in the morning.  Tasty, eh?

After the Castle we walked back in the sunshine along the spit to Keyhaven to pick up the car and battle across the Forest and through the traffic at Lyndhurst.  Thank goodness I wasn't driving!
