Anniversary Treat

One of the treats from the kids in celebration of our 40th wedding anniversary was a boat trip to the Bass Rock just off North Berwick.  It was one of those trips where we asked ourselves why hadn't we done this before?

We started off with some North Berwick lobster from a kiosk on the harbour quay.  Then onto the Sula II whose passengers included around 20 young cubs of the scouting kind.  The Sula is an open boat but the weather was fine and the sea calm.  It was her last trip of the season.

Out to the Forth to the Craig where we saw lots of cormorants before turning to the Bass Rock.  It is home to around 150,000 gannets many of whom are circling the rock at any one time.  The smell from the rock was quite distinctive and the sight of them all was astonishing.  They are one of the most elegant of birds.

On the rock, as well as the gannets there is a lighthouse and the remains of a chapel and a prison.  But the place belongs to the gannets.

When we returned to North Berwick, we found that one gannet had left a deposit on the back of Ellen's jacket.  Apparently it is lucky.
