Late at night while you're sleeping

Why is it at this time of the year the ivy seems to appear to be growing through every fence, bush and round every tree? Where once the park was surrounded by blackberry bushes there's now creeping ivy appearing. It's very green fresh but an unwelcome reminder that winter is on it's way now and there's no holding it back.
Still I refuse to give in to any rumours that heating is needed. Extra jumpers and socks is what's administered in our house!
