Common but not in our garden which is where I found this.
The cap of this aptly named edible fungus is also called the lawyer's wig as it is feathered in white, hanging in scale-like sections. Delicate and with a hollow stalk, the gills turn pink then black with age till it disintegrates into a black dripping mass. My book says to gather unopened specimens and cook without delay - hmm I think not. I am not a Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall. The common ink cap which lacks the scales on top is toxic if consumed with alcohol - well there you go, not for us then!
