Walking round the past
Hard to give a title to this photo of a scene I've never before visited but which struck me as strangely familiar. Apparently from this viewpoint I'm on Mel Gibson's Golgotha - or was it Pasolini's? - looking across at the houses of first century Jerusalem. Both filmmakers used the city of Matera for key moments in their films about Christ - Pasolini's Gospel according to St Matthew and Gibson's film about the Passion.
A long and fascinating day exploring round this huge sink-hole and in the warren of cave dwellings and churches of Matera. And when the sun appeared in mid-afternoon it transformed everything.
But the grey light of the post-thunderstorm morning was when it was most atmospheric...
