CleanSteve and I went to Sezincote house today, fulfilling a long-held ambition of mine to visit the only Indian Mogul-style grand house in Western Europe! It is believed to be the inspiration for the Indian elements of Brighton Pavillion, which was originally going to be built in the Chinese style.

Sezincote, its farms and estate stand in the North Cotswolds, not far from Stow-on-the-Wold. The house is still inhabited by the family and farms are worked. We had a tour of the "hice" from an aristocratic, ancient lady, kyphotic and apt to forget her words mid-sentence. She must surely be part of the family firm. What impressed me most about the house, apart from the Orangery attached, which CleanSteve has blipped, was the wallpaper of the dining room, hand painted with scenes of India, created by a man who'd never set foot on the subcontinent!

The garden was so full of wonders that we are going to have to go back and spend longer there. I've chosen the pond with its clear water, pale grey mud which is reflected in the colours of the planting, and temple to Surya. There was also the magnificent guest wing attached to the house, culminating in the "Tent Room' which was a previous owner's bedroom, which could be left open to the stars. You can see it in my flickr album.
