The Blood Red Crescent Moon
Taken just after midnight the blood red crescent moon is reaching it's first quarter phase. The sun lights it from the right side. When the moon first enters the Earth's partial shadow, known as the penumbra, a dark shadow begins to creep across the moon until the 28th September when it is a full lunar eclipse. This rare event, although it's the fourth in two years, makes the moon appear red and is called a blood moon. It will look up to 14% larger because it is nearer the Earth than at any other point in it's elliptical orbit. The Earth's atmosphere scatters the sun's red visible light. The same process that turns the sky red at sunset. My granddaughter's husband looked this information up which we found most interesting. I hope to get another moon shot on the 28th Sep. Family visit this weekend end with small children which was most enjoyable although exhausting. This evening my daughter, who is still here, and I will be taking it easy !
