Diary of an Edinburgher

Mystery solved

The neighbour came to check the non-functioning electric lawnmower using his special electricity measuring gizmo. Strangely, and embarrassingly, it worked. There was nothing wrong with it. It does require the knobs to be pressed in a certain order, and I didn't yesterday for some reason. Nothing to do with my haste to watch the tennis...

However, the neighbour solved a very annoying mystery which has been driving me bonkers for the last couple of weeks - constant scraping noise from the flat above. I assumed it was the student upstairs perhaps whittling an art work out of a block of wood. I said bad words as she scraped away every afternoon and late into the evenings. Eventually I went and asked her. And she had thought it was me! The only solution was that it was rats in the walls!! However, these rats also tapped. Mystery.

The neighbour said it was (cowboy) builders in the next flat up, which is below his flat. He has complained to them about the unsociable working hours and will complain to the (absentee) landlord. All good!

JR took Archie up the Hill while I mowed the lawns. Then we walked round the block car spotting. I do hope we didn't look too suspicious, criss-crossing the road, peering into cars.

Tennis and rugby all afternoon. Though Archie would make a better wall than a window.

All Blacks later. Archie WILL have to move then.
