Death and Life . . . and mirrors
Mirrors reflecting wonderful architecture, hundreds of dead flies created in bone china and rings of porcelain butterflies around the pillars - all displayed in Carlisle Cathedral. The artist (Christine Hurford) says: As these insects are viewed in the mirrors, they become 'alive', death with glimpses of life. It was an interesting installation. I am not too sure about the dead flies - if you really want to see some I have added an extra picture. But the butterflies were rather special, their fragility beautifully captured in the porcelain and contrasting with the pillars that have lasted for centuries - not always intact!
