Foxgloves (Rogerstone)

The photo is an aerial view of Foxgloves Development in Rogerstone, Newport, South Wales. It's taken at a height of about 500 feet to get the whole estate in.

Rogerstone was traditionally an industrial, working-class village, but recent expensive housing developments such as the one shown in the on the site of the former power station  has added more than 1,000 dwellings and an ever-increasing middle-class population. The site has doctors surgery, shops, supermarket, and a school.

Building started about 1994. My oldest lad was in junior school when the builders ran a competition to name the estate, with a prize for the winner. My lad won a £20 W H Smith voucher!  We were hoping it was going to be a house!! :)

Rogerstone Castle was built in the early part of the 12th century. The name is said to originate from Roger de Haia, the Norman Lord who was responsible for the building of the castle, the remains of which are reduced to a low bush and tree covered motte opposite Criddle's garage on the lower section of Tregwilym Road. The welsh name for Rogerstone "Tŷ Du" translates to English as "Black House", though no one is entirely sure why it has this name.
