Glasson Dock
Today's the day ............................ to build a port
In 1787, the Lancaster Port Commission opened a new dock at Glasson because it was difficult for larger vessels to navigate their way up the River Lune to the quays of Lancaster.
Some years later, a branch of the Lancaster Canal was built from Galgate to Glasson which gave a further boost to the port and helped to speed up the movement of cargoes from the ships, which traded as far as the West Indies and the Baltic. In 1837, the year Queen Victoria came to the throne, shipbuilding began at Glasson Dock.
This is how it looks today, basking in the warm autumn sun. A limited amount of commercial traffic still uses the dock, with outbound shipments including coal for the Isle of Man and the Western Islands of Scotland, and incoming cargoes including animal foodstuffs and fertilizer, which are stored in the sheds located on the dock side .........................
