After a day in the office I headed through to Glasgow for an evening discussion organised by the Area Support Team. The panel was discussing the topic: "When there are 3 solicitors representing adults - where is Kilbrandon?"
The need for this has arisen from a perception - and some anecdotes - that the increased recognition of the rights of all parties in the children's hearing - a move accepted by nearly all - was, in the way it was being executed, leading to greater adversity in hearings and a loss of focus on the child.
Various speakers represented a variety of views and there was a good discussion covering a wide range of topics. There was no clear meeting of minds but a better understanding of the perspectives. Some research is underway to get a better understanding of the issues and to think about how inappropriate behaviour might be better monitored and managed.
The event was in the Banqueting Hall which meant going up the magnificent marble staircase with its own perspectives of arches, angles and banisters.
