The life & times of Jacks

Cubs at Play

We had discussions of maybe skipping one of the morning game drives but thankfully all times we dragged our butts out of bed and made it to the drive.

On Sunday we had the absolute pleasure of watching a lioness and her cubs at play.  When we first found her with her cubs they were all just dozing there.  Soon they perked up the the cubs (both male) started to chase and pounce on each other while the mother looked on.  They were such an adorable little family.

Sadly, being boys, the cubs will grow up and leave their mother on her own.  She is a solitary lion - she had girl cubs once and a sister but another pride attacked and killed her sister and her girls leaving the sister's two boys who she raised only for them to grow up and leave her.  Joel told us that she would be better to have some girls to help her form some company and a new pride.  Lion politics is all quite violent.

We also saw a whole load of giraffe, more elephants - finally saw a pack of hyenas on the move and then a whole load of hippos yawning and jumping about in the river which was awesome to watch.  We finally also saw some zebra which were amazing to see.

We are sad that it is our last full day away before travelling home but we are looking forward to seeing our own little black lions (Rosie and Nibbler).
