What is it?

I know it's not Thursday (for a formal "Abstract Thursday" blip). However the opportunity arose today (and will be gone by tomorrow) for me to photograph a certain object for today's blip.

It's been quite heavily processed, in particular using the "Difference Clouds" filter in Photoshop (which I hadn't even discovered before): it was rather fun playing with it!

I wonder if you can guess what it started off as?
