Any bee keepers out there?

Can anyone tell me why bees would want to set up home in my wooden slated compost heap
The top layer is currently grass cuttings and I am afraid to churn up the compost in case the bees get upset
There are currently one or two dozen flying frantically about
I only managed a decent shot of one taking a rest, as they refuse to line up for a group photo
