Castle of Villena
Today's Blip is a view of the double outer walls of the Atalaya Castle, taken from the top floor of the Keep Tower........and what a lots of steps we had to climb, to get this view!
The Castle was constructed by the Arabs in the 11th Century.....and was laid siege to, attacked and conquered, by the Christians...led by James I of Aragon......no small feat when the walls are about 3 metres thick!
The Castle, really a military fortress, has 12 Guard Towers, an inner courtyard and has its own well.
It was built on a very commanding high site, and today dominates the sky line of a huge ....peaceful...agricultural area, specialising in vines.
At night, the Castle is illuminated and looks spectacular!
