Afternoon snack
Waiting in line for the feeder to empty out so he could get his snack , a male goldfinch was lit by the late afternoon sun. I sat there for a half an hour as there was a male hummer flitting in and out of the dahlias, but as soon as I went out with the camera he disappeared. I thought they had left. Therefore today's blip is my goldfinch, not great but the best of the bunch. I did have to lighten it up a bit. Goldfinches nest later than a lot of birds as they feed exclusively on seeds. they love thistle seeds and use the fluff on the seeds to line their nests. In a good year ( like this one) they can produce two broods ( apparently the female splits leaving dad to bring up the babies and mates with another male for the second batch!) and they can fledge as late as September. Which I am seeing. There are several groups of babies we have seen following the parents around begging for food.
