The Church of St John Maddermarket, Norwich
At lunchtime while walking along one of the lanes, off Pottergate, I noticed the door to this church was open, & a welcoming 'please come in' sign just outside. So I went in.
There was a nice young lady to greet me - but no one else. She let me walk about without any pressure & I told her that I wasn't particularly religious, but that I do like old buildings. She didn't cast me out, and so I took this photo of the window & the beautiful arched ceiling wall posts - medieval I read in the leaflet the lady gave me.
It would appear to be roughly 15th c with older and younger bits. In 1990 it was saved and is now in the hands of The Churches Conservation Trust - a group who protect historic churches. I recommend walking around if you get the opportunity, but as it is manned by volunteers it isn't open every day.
I walked through the church down a lane past the Maddermarket Theatre. I had heard of this, but not stumbled upon it until today.
The remainder of my day was ordinary and I was glad to get home just before Jon & Mollie pulled up.
Then to Morrisons with Henry & Mollie in tow, to spend more than I would if we had an Aldi, followed by an evening of doing nothing!
Perfect!
