Amorous Amwell Dragons

It has been going on for 300 million years. He has brilliant eyesight and spots a female. No wooing or foreplay, he might even hijack her when she's basking. He grasps her in a dragon headlock with his special claspers and transports her to the marriage bed. She curls her abdomen up until they are in tandem. He has juggled his sperm and uses his penis to remove any sperm deposited by other males before inseminating her. They part and he hovers on guard ready to repel any other suitors until she has laid.

I witnessed all this on the dragonfly trail at Amwell Nature Reserve this afternoon. I think these are Migrant Hawkers judging by the 'golf tee' mark on his thorax. Their offspring will crawl out of the water next year.

PS I've added a pic of the female ovipositing and the male keeping guard over her for Loisbiz. :)
