The Chief engineer, a Russian I think, called Serg Lapaskosis was convinced that the problem with the tunnel wall could be sorted by simply drilling down to it, because to reach the area any other way with the necessary gear was a dodgy journey at best and had advised the pumping station to cease operations for a few days while the work was done.

He had pointed out to the meeting however that an actual site inspection would be necessary before pumping operations restarted and one of the hazard team, Stu Pider volunteered to do this the next day once the remote repairs were completed. He apparently was an expert on small dark places but had a bad smoking habit which contributed negatively to his popularity with the team.
