Lozarhythm Of The Day:
The Crystals - Uptown (recorded February 1962)
This song set in Harlem in New York was written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil for Tony Orlando, but was recorded by the Crystals, a quintet led here by Barbara Alston. They were produced by Phil Spector using his Wall Of Sound techniques at Mira Sound Studios in New York. This track opened a 3CD collection of Mann and Weil songs that I was playing on this day. Little Eva recorded it later the same year and over at Motown in 1968 a version was prepared for the Supremes to record. They turned it down and so the Marvelettes added their vocals instead for the album In Full Bloom.
