Citizen not subject

On a day of obsequious fawning in the media here's my attempt at redressing the balance. I'm a proud member of Republic, an organisation which campaigns for the abolition of the monarchy and it's replacement with an elected head of state. 

As a supposed modern democracy how can we seriously celebrate the fact that one person has remained in power in a hereditary public office for such a long time? It goes against every democratic principle.
