Centenarian Cork oaks
You know things are getting tricky here in the south when you see people return to the land. Before it was potential real estate; now a traditional source of income.
Before I've blipped the small scale olive growers returning to their groves, and here on the coast forgotten oaks around our house are being harvested for their cork.
The trees vulnerable inner bark is amber colour, turning a dark red and then a light grey like teak terrace furniture left out in the rain.
These trees must have tales to tell; a perspective that spans centuries - they are called Centenarians. Funny as we've just been sitting out having a glass of wine thinking back over the last two years of married life and it's amazing how much changes; so just think how much has changed here over the last two centuries!
