Castle Menzies
Stopped off today at the beautiful Castle Menzies as the cloud formation was stunning. I love the way the baronial style turrets jut out from the wall and the clouds create a magical atmosphere.
This Z-plan type castle dates from the 16th century. It is situated to the West of Weem, near Aberfeldy, Perthshire. The castle stands on the site of an earlier fortification known as the "Place of Weem" which was built in 1488 by Sir Robert Menzies. This initial castle was burnt down in 1502 by Neil Stewart of Garth Castle.
Bonnie Prince Charlie rested at the castle for 2 nights on his way to the Battle of Culloden (the family were thrown out of the castle as punishment for allowing this to happen).
