The Marble Church,

Frederik’s Church, popularly known as The Marble Church for its rococo architecture, is an Evangelical Lutheran church in Copenhagen. The church was designed by the architect Nicolai Eigtved in 1740 and with other buildings was intended to commemorate the 300 years jubilee of the first coronation of a member of the house of Oldenburg.  It has the largest church dome in Scandinavia with a span if 31m. The foundation stone was set in 1749, but due to financial difficulties it lay abandoned for 150 years until Ferdinand Meldahl designed the church in its final form.  The original plans for the church to be built almost entirely from marble were discarded and instead Meldahl opted for construction to be done with limestone.  It was finally opened to the public in August 1894.

The Danish monarchy is one of the oldest in the world.  The current monarch, Queen Margrethe II can trace her lineage back to the first Viking kings of Denmark over 1000 years ago.  Just as in London, you can watch the changing of the guard each day.
