Village symbols.

Our village symbols are the oak and the anvil, which represent its past links to the iron-smelting industry. Much of this iron was used to make cannons as well as other smaller items, such as nails and household utensils.

The anvil represents the iron which was obtained from the rich local deposits of ore and the oak represents the surrounding woods, which supplied the charcoal to fuel the furnaces. In fact, these days you could buy a house in the nearby 'Furnace Wood'... although you'd need a spare million or three do to do so!

This oak and anvil were presented to our local community centre by the social club which has its home there in November 2000 and the inscription reads 'Presented... to mark the beginning of the new millennium.'
