South Gare

We travelled north and East to compete in a CLOK orienteering event today. South Gare is a spit of land created in the 19th century to extend and improve Teesport. Dorman and Long dumped lines of slag from the furnaces to create the base for the breakwater and road.

The sand dunes and grass covered slag ridges made an ideal orienteering area although the spiky Marram grass did make the straight line approach uncomfortable.

Richard and I debated which photo best reflected the area. I liked this of lake, dunes and wind power where he favoured the more industrial shot of the steelworks. This was possibly due to working there as a student.
