WW1 Airfield

We spent a very enjoyable and nostalgic day here at Stow Maries WW1 airfield in Essex. Built in 1916, it was a base for the new 37 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, who helped defend London from German bombing raids.
It closed in 1919 and remained overgrown until 2009 when it was rediscovered by a group of enthusiasts.
Now the National Heritage Memorial Fund grant means its future is secured.
Of the 250 aerodromes built during World War I, Stow Maries is the only one to have remained in near-perfect condition of the 10 that still exist. We had a most interesting one hour tour of the airfield and buildings given by a very enthusiastic volunteer guide; lunch in the officers mess; watched a few aircraft fly in and then take off again; had a wander round the lovely classic cars on display; particularly liked this Morgan in pristine condition; and lastly a walk round the Nature Reserve although not much wildlife to be seen today - I expect the Barn Owls come out at night.
An hour's drive back to Shirley's for a quick feet up, change and then out for dinner at The Blue Strawberry in Hatfield Peverel for another gorgeous meal. We'll be the size of a house, no make that a block of flats, by the time this weekend has finished!!
