Copenhagen and Me.

A Small Taste Of History

I'm fairly sure that there are not many breweries that have archives like this. There are three archivists and a student looking after nearly 250 years worth of material. Ulla (pictured left) got out the oldest piece for my colleagues and I to gawp at; the ledger top right, from 1767. The picture was of a random page and at the bottom are notes written by Carlsberg's founder (J.C. "The Captain" Jakobsen), which says a lot about the man, who was born in 1811. To not only see such a thing, let alone actually touch it, is kinda special. Carl, the founders son, was an early/only adopter in Denmark, of a new fangled concept called "marketing"  and there are many, many beautiful examples of this all over the place. The one featured is quite clever for a number of reasons but mostly because it is trying to unite two breweries; Old Carlsberg (dad and founder) & New Carlsberg (son & namesake). The father and son hated each other with a passion, that led to the two being competitors for life (after a very short working partnership).

I'm still thinking about photo holidays here and I think the cellars are worth a few hours shooting - see extra.
