Day 6
Burra
Two and a half years ago CCN and I drove across Australia to be with my wonderful Mum who was struggling to overcome a major health challenge at the age of 90. We travelled the same road on our way to Perth that we've travelled over the past 6 days. Last time we did the same mileage in two days. It hardly gave us time to blink but we do remember driving into the historic town of Burra in the Clare region and thinking, one day we will come back and really have a good look around.
Today was that day and we were full of anticipation as we left Renmark this morning. We vividly remembered the incredibly beautiful scenery in this area. Last time it was the height of summer and the wheat was the colour of well.....wheat!! A golden wheat colour and just about ready to be cropped. We knew that this time the colour would be a verdant green as the wheat is very new out of the ground. As you will see from this image today, Australia is a country of green and gold at this time of the year.
I want to tell you that this image came straight out of the camera!!!!! It really is amazing to see.
We took this photo because we were told by one of the local identities in the cafe we visited that if we drove for two minutes of of town in this direction we would see this view. Apparently this Canola field is only rotated every eight years and our new found friend has had to wait all this time to see it in flower again. Weren't we lucky!!
My extra today is of the Engine House Museum on the outskirts of Burra. It's a fascinating site and part of the original copper mine. It's a fascinating town and you could spend a week here and not see all there is to see.
Tomorrow we will tread some new ground for us as we head down the east coast of the Eyre Peninsular towards Port Lincoln. It promises to be a fantastic few days as we call in on the little fishing villages all along the coast. Can't wait to taste the rock lobsters - just hope they're in season!!
Day 6.......Renmark to Burra.....197km
