This weekend is the English Bankholiday (one of seven public holidays) when traditionally the roads to the seaside are busy on the last holiday before Christmas.  No one would dress like this on a day out to the seaside now but it was then normal to go in their ‘Sunday Best’ clothes.  The photo shows my Great Grandfather and mother with her sister whose husband was in South Africa fighting in the Boer War.  I think they were on their way to the Lincolnshire or Norfolk coast but presumably with no intention of swimming.
