Wrinkles of Finchale Abbey
Well you would have a few wrinkles if you had been standing on the edge of the River Wear since the 12th-century when a stone chapel of St John the Baptist was built on the site of Godric of Finchale's burial ground! Every time we go to visit Mum at her care home, we pass the sign for Finchale Abbey (or "Priory" on some signs) yet had never visited it. Mum remembered it well from going there occasionally with Dad. In those days there were no iron railings keeping the tourists off the walls. I love the layers in the weathered sandstone of the ancient buildings of this area.
