Newhaven Gala Day
I love Joe's school. It's small and somewhat scruffy but the Headmistress is an amazing lady, energetic, hard working and dedicated to the school. Three years ago she revived the Newhaven Gala day - it's fab.
Obviously Newhaven was a fishing village so the Gala day is all about the history of the place. The children dress up as fisher men and fisherwomen down at the Harbour. The Gala Queen comes into the harbour in a big decorated boat, then they parade back to the school with drummers and the Queen is crowned by a man who went to the school in 1925! (Victoria is the oldest working school in Edinburgh)
Thankfully the day was dry and sunny, Joe managed his role of fisher man replete with sou'wester, even though he only mouthed the words to the traditional fishing songs! I managed my stint on the tea stall and all in all it was a great success!
