Goosander

This lone female Goosander I spotted swimming in Aberdeen Harbour amongst Eider ducks. Goosanders spend the winter here along sheltered coastlines. They do breed in Scotland and nest in a hole in a tree or on the ground.
The male has a black head and back, the female has a red head with crest and a grey body. They both appear to sit low in the water. The Beauly Firth is the best place to see many who overwinter there.
