Recording studio

James and Ryan recorded and mixed an original song today that Ryan had composed a couple of weeks back.

Some sort of gadget allows the guitar(s) to be plugged into it and then it plugs directly into the laptop to capture the recording without any ambient noise and an absence of white noise / hiss.

Aside from being blown away by the casual ease with which they played and recorded, then subsequently mixed, tweaked and layered the tracks, I was impressed by what Ryan had composed - it was beautiful, nuanced and has stuck in my head all afternoon.

I have reflected again on how exam results don't reflect talent and ability all of the time - if you were to look at his GCSE music grade (he passed, but it wasn't quite a 'good' pass), you might jump to some extraordinarily inaccurate conclusions. however, there is no doubt in my mind that Ryan is, without question, innately talented as a musician. I envy him that but am grateful that his talent and enthusiasm is having such a positive impact on James' musical development.

Despite being a 6 foot 2 inches tall young adult, when James presented him with a Sombrero to wear this afternoon, his face was the exact picture of surprised delight that small children give on Christmas morning. Priceless.
