inspiration all around us

We could see the castle from where we were staying, in Flanesford Priory. It was a twenty minute walk away. Although it was just a ruin, the audio commentaries and information boards described vividly castle life in its heyday.

The chapel, though bare, was roofed and had two modern windows. One commemorated the lives of eleven men who died when their plane crashed nearby while on a test mission. They were developing a radar system for use in World War Two.

The other window was designed by Nicola Hopwood, and installed in 2000. It depicts the meandering course of the river Wye and incorporates artwork from local schoolchildren. It is altogether a more optimistic and pleasing design.
