St Cuthbert's Edinburgh

The church is named after Celtic missionary Cuthbert, who is said to have preached in Edinburgh in the 7th century. There have been at least 7 buildings on the same site. The present building, designed by Hippolyte Blanc, dates from the 1890's. It seems the building it replaced was too plain.

This picture shows the apse. There is the alabaster frieze based on da Vinci's Last Supper. The ceiling depicts Christ and his angels above the windows, and four apostles. It was all the more amazing to see it with organ music soaring in the background. They were practising for a concert later in the day...
