in Flanders Field 6; departure

Anniemay is finishing breakfast in our sumptuous B&B, before we pack to go home.

We’ve really loved our stay in Ypres - or to give it its proper name - Ieper.  I should have twigged it was in the Dutch-speaking part of the country - Flanders, Flemish…. doh!

The rebuilding has been superb - the Cloth Hall dates from the 13C and you’d be pushed to spot the join.

The city is a world peace site, twinned with Hiroshima and does much to promote peace and reconciliation.

It’s been a pleasure to ride our bikes in a place which does so much to promote 2-wheeled transport.  Cycle-lanes everywhere, drivers who give way and space to bike-riders and everywhere, the steady progress of young and old, male and female on the ubiquitous ‘sit-up and beg’ Dutch bike.

Things to like about Belgium;
frites with mayo
bike-friendly culture
Miro
Tintin
brown beer
chocolate
Plastic Bertrand

When we get home we realise we’ve bought chocolate souvenirs for everyone except ourselves.

We’ll be back.
