Summer comes to an end

Autumn is in the air, but the summer isn't over till the Santandrea jazz band plays. They've played here every August for 26 years, always to a rapturous reception. The repertoire hasn't changed for a few years so I was glad that they had updated it this year, and in particular had Bruno "Smiling Face" Perren on vocals. He's classically trained and has a beautiful voice, but usually he just plays the banjo, which is a bit of a waste.

Guy Sanchez is a relative newcomer -- he's only been playing with them for about five years and plays clarinet and saxophone with a lovely liquid sound. Brassens, Nougaro, Vian, Trenet, Salvador, as well as the usual standards by Armstrong, Bechet, Ellington et al. An excellent evening, even if it was a bit chilly for those of us who'd neglected to wear a fleece. A few more portraits on Flickr.
