Up the country . . .
Second breakfast in Harley's cafe, where there are delicious cakes and apple pie and custard served all day, and has the added bonus of free wi fi, so ticks all the important boxes!
An afternoon of exploring up the country. Lovely place names brought back childhood picnic memories, Alwinton, Snitter, Sharpeton, Holystone, Burradon, Biddleston and Harbottle. Beautiful church at Alwinton dating back to the 1200s, with fascinating old overgrown gravestones. Standing reading then when we saw a hare lolloping through them . . . . . Also popped into the cemetery here to have a look at Granny and Granda's grave. I haven't been back here since Granny's funeral in 2000.
Main meal of the day was a carvery in Thropton at the Three Wheats Heads - really tasty and no cooking or washing up to do at all! Walked down to the village in the evening, bats flitting between the trees above our heads . . .
Perfect day . . . and it's only the first of the holiday!
