Topsham Ferry

We are visiting family in Somerset this weekend. Today we headed down to Exeter and took a walk along the Exeter Ship Canal to Topsham Lock. From here the Topsham Ferry took us across the River Exe to Topsham.

This is the new ferry which came into operation just over a year ago. There has been a ferry crossing here since medieval times.

Topsham is a fascinating town with a long history. It dates from pre-Roman times, and was the port of the Roman settlement of Isca Dumnoniorum (Exeter). In medieval times it was a major sea port, but ultimately went into decline as a port after construction of the ship canal to Exeter.
