Lytham St Annes

For her mum's birthday, the Minx hired her a beach hut for a day at Lytham St Annes, which was today. We had worries about the weather but in the end it was just fine.

When Abi and I turned up - Dan was spending the day with his mum prior to us going away - there was a fair amount of the Minx's extended family there already. In many ways, they reminded me of my mum's family: something in the easy familiarity and gentle teasing, perhaps.

Although the sea was some way out - and, I think, doesn't ever come in that close - there was still something very seaside-y about it. It was most pleasant to sit on a chair on the promenade just in front of the hut, letting one's eyes relax and take in the long, uninterrupted distances.

Later on, after she'd had a long play on the sand with the miniMinx, I took Abi home and returned with Dan. It was chilly by then and we sat in the hut under a blanket, huddled together reading our books until he decided to go down onto the beach to play badminton.

It was a lovely day. I enjoyed sitting in the sun, being with the Minx's family who made me feel very welcome, and then the evening, snuggled up nice and warm, reading my book by the open doors of the beach hut. I'd plan to do this more often, if only we could count on the weather.
