"Slippery Street" and the King's Tomb
This street in the heart of the town ascends a gentle hill and is paved with local stone. It is known by the locals as slippery street - it gets slippery in wet or freezing conditions, though they have tried to improve this by cutting grooves into the paving stones.
The street leads to the tomb of a Lycian king. The Lycians were a matriarchal culture with an evolved democratic system; the tombs of important people are often in the form of columns with a roof like an upturned boat in which the soul of the dead were to journey to the sun. Sounds more hopeful to me than some of the alternatives on offer...
