Midden.
On the north side of Raglan harbour there was a large population of Maori prior to the arrival of Europeans. As they had no animals for protein they lived on birds and sea-life. The huge amount of shell fish harvested from the harbour is evidenced by these extraordinary huge middens of shells. It is amazing to contemplate how many shellfish were eaten to create these mountains of shells.
This is my last blip until mid September as I am heading off on an intrepid trip to the kashmir region of India where there is little or no internet. Best wishes to all you lovely people in blipland.
