St.Cadoc's Church, Llancarfan, Vale of Glamorgan.

My beloved and I visited this lovely old church today where Christian faith has been practiced for 1,500 years. We went to view some of the newly discovered wall paintings dating back to 1300 which were found there during recent renovations. In 2008, it became necessary to replace a piece of worm eaten timber which was supporting a roof beam. During the replacement, the repairers noticed a thin red line of ochre paint at the top of the wall. On investigation, they discovered that underneath 27 layers of lime wash, there was the painted head of a princess who was saved from the dragon by St. George. It has taken many years to reveal not only the princess, but her parents in a castle and the figure of St. George in full armour on his magnificent steed and his lance entering the dragon's throat. Some wonderful paintings of the seven deadly sins were also revealed.  The church is now awaiting the conservator and her students returning to continue their work in uncovering more wall paintings.  The paintings were originally hidden behind the lime wash on the orders of Henry 8th during the reformation period. Fortunately, the Victorians did not have enough money to make any "improvements" to the church and so the paintings have remained in their unharmed condition until their recent discovery. It is well worth a visit if anybody has the chance!
