Shengani patrol

Ok, we were crack from the Matopo's by today, but they deserve another picture.

Cecil Rhodes stipulated in his Will that he was to be buried at 'Worlds view' in the Maropo's. He died in Cape Town and it took two weeks to get his body to the site (it was in three coffins, the first being lead), probably pretty stinky by the time it arrived.

This isn't of the brass plaque marking his grave, but of the memorial to the 34 men of the Shenfani patrol who were ambushed by more than 3,000 Matabele when out on patrol and massacred. They fought with such bravery that their bodies, normally desembowled by the Matabele, were left intact. The memorial includes each member of the patrol and items such as bits, studios and rifles from the 1893 ambush. Many roads and schools in Bulawayo are named after members of Major Alan Wilsons patrol.
