"Morally straight... To do my duty to God...&

This is Boy Scouts of America's resource center in Philadelphia. It stands on city-owned land, but it pays no rent in perhaps the most valuable location in town. The city told the Scouts in 2006 to either stop barring membership to homosexuals, or start paying rent, or vacate the premises. In spite of broad support locally, the scouts took it to court and finally won the day this year.

The scouts also bar membership to atheists and agnostics. This gets little or no attention, but to me it is just as serious a problem as the first mentioned. Justice for atheists, free thinkers, and secular people apparently needs to wait for a future generation to enjoy.

On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake, and morally straight.
