After 3 years and no tenants, we finally moved the bluebird house to a new spot on the front lawn. It immediately attracted attention - not just from a pair of bluebirds but from a horde of marauding tree swallows which are also cavity nesters. The scenario usually builds like this: (1) house seems quiet (2) tree swallows swoop in and investigate (3) as if from nowhere, the bluebirds arrive and drive them off (4) bluebirds fly away (5) go to (1). I suspect that the bluebirds have a nest elsewhere but are keeping a close eye on what they seem to see as a desirable residence, but one for the future. Time will tell.
Personally I'd be more than happy if the tree swallows used the house - hey, I'd even settle for a wren - but Mr L wants bluebirds. Let's hope he's not disappointed.
